Staffordshire terriers are one of the most loving and caring dog breeds. Considered friendly, playful and loyal to it's family, Staffies are known to be especially good with children; they have a gentle, almost protective nature.

Staffy's love to play, run and explore, they have boundless energy and a heart full of love. They equally love to lounge around and relax in the sun.

What is the adoption process?

Potential adopters can do a meet and greet with an animal that is available for adoption. Staff will guide you to ensure that the pet is a good fit for your family. Paperwork can be done on the spot and the animal can go home with you on the same day. All animals are vet checked, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and lifetime registered.

How long will it take for my dog to settle into our home?

Settling in a new pet will not happen overnight and new adopters will need patience to help the animal adjust. We remind people about the 3-3-3 rule.

Understanding your pets needs over the first 3 days, 3 weeks and 3 months will assist you in setting your new dog up for success and laying the foundation for a long and happy life together. It's important to remember that every dog is unique, and some may take longer to adjust than others. The 3-3-3 rule is a guideline, and it's important to be patient, and consistent, and provide plenty of love and positive reinforcement throughout the entire adoption process.

  • Animals need 3 days to decompress
  • 3 weeks to understand the home routine and start to feel settled
  • 3 months to feel fully settled and relaxed with their new family.

By following the 3-3-3 rule, you will be able to identify any behavioural issues early on and address them before they become bigger problems. Dogs are creatures of habit and routine, and they need time to adjust to new environments and build trust with their new family.

I am having trouble with my pet's behaviour, what can I do?

Remember that settling in and adjusting to new routines can take up to 3 months. Give your pet the best chance to adjust by giving them a quiet space to decompress for the first 3 days.

Gradually introduce your new dog to other family members and pets. Keep their routines consistent and give them plenty of positive reinforcement for good behaviour. Use treats, praise, and toys to reward them for following commands and exhibiting good behaviour. Start introducing them to new environments, such as walks in the neighbourhood or trips to the park. But be mindful of their comfort level and keep them on a leash until you're confident they won't run off or get scared. By the end of the first three weeks, your new dog should be comfortable with their new home and family members.

During the next three months, continue to reinforce positive behaviour and gradually increase their exposure to new experiences. Consider enrolling them in obedience classes or training sessions to help them develop good habits and build confidence. This is also a good time to establish a routine for exercise, playtime, and training. Be patient with your new dog and continue to provide plenty of love and positive reinforcement.

By the end of the first three months, your new dog should be fully adjusted to their new home and routines. However, it's important to remember that every dog is unique, and some may take longer to adjust than others. Work with a dog trainer to address any behavioural issues as many unwanted behaviours can be addressed through proper training and socialisation.

Are there additional support services for new adopters?

We provide owners of newly adopted animals 30 day free access to an online platform called Pet Academy which provides animal 1:1 access to certified, positive reinforcement based trainers via text message, as well as access to a library of over 100 animated courses and lessons. Additionally, we encourage new dog adopters to join a dog training club (such as Blacktown Kennel and Training Club) or seek out private dog trainers to help them develop good habits and build confidence.

Can you tell me more about the training classes?

Our Staffy September training classes are designed for Blacktown LGA residents or BARC adopters from anywhere!

We are going to try to help socialise your staffy to be a SUPER STAFFY!!

Remember; the key to training is for you both to HAVE FUN!! We only use POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT and FEAR FREE so we encourage ALL owners to training without anything unhelpful like smacking, check-chaining or shouting.

Dogs may be excited and easily distract, so try not to put too much pressure on them, let them have fun!
